Tesla announced that they will charge owners of their soon-to-market Model 3 for charging at their supercharge stations. The head of Tesla reminded us that their Supercharging Network is actually designed for “long distance travel”.
Superchargers, often called Level 3 chargers, cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars to install. Recovery of a small part of the huge capital cost through charging to charge seems to make economic sense.
Our favorite quote from this article is from JB Straubel of Tesla:
“So often, it is far more convenient and faster for you overall to charge at home or at work,” said Straubel. “Time and time again, we see people drive to Supercharger stations, wait there for 30 minutes and drive to a different destination. And if they do their math – and they value their time – it makes no sense.”
